The Junkanoo was over. I was two days away from heading over to Belize and starting the “real” part of the journey. The rest of the trip was too be more subdued, less extravagant, and more adventurous. On three different occasions in the Bahamas I had people who knew me through my connections to East Lansing including a recent MSU grad who came up to me while I was in the pool to ask me if I was the Mayor of East Lansing. I can’t imagine that will happen to me in jungles of Belize. Bring it on- I am ready.

These events occurred between December 28, 2007 and January 3, 2008.
New Years Eve was upon us. We decided to take it easy during the day because the Junkanoo starts at 1 am just one hour after the ball drops in Time Square.
There was much confusion on how to partake in the Junkanoo. We were told by some to get there early so we could find a good spot on the streets to watch. Others told us to buy tickets so we could get good seats in the bleachers that lined much of the parade route. Only to be followed up by our hotel bartender who told us we could buy tickets there and that we shouldn’t worry about getting there until at least 3 am.
“What should we do today, Brain? What we do everyday, Pinky. Try to take over the world.”

I quickly showered and changed into my traveling clothes. I carefully accounted for all of the items that were to be transferred in to the car. I went over to Cob, my dog of eight years, to say good-bye. For those without dogs it might seem over dramatic but he will be one of the things I will miss the most during my trip. For the past two weeks he moped around the house because he knew something big was going to happen. I thought to myself- he is in good hands. Patti and Brent Dolan, the brother and sister who were renting my house, have lived there for a while and they have their own dog, Josie who will keep him company. Good-bye –Cob.
