We woke up early and had breakfast at Martha’s Guest House and planned out the day. We wanted to hike towards the Mayan site, Cahal Pach, which was at the edge of town and we needed to make arrangements for our day trip to the Mayan site of Tikal and then onward to Flores for the night. The dilemma we discussed over breakfast was what to do with our packs as we spent the day hiking through the pyramids of Tikal. I guess we will worry about that when the time comes.

The Zoo’s accommodations were cabana style with metal roofs. Since it continued to rain through the night, we were woken many times by the swoosh sounds of the rain hitting the metal roof. Patrick thought the sounds reminded him of sniper rifles. “I thought we were under attack,” Patrick said in the morning. We were under attack but it was by the weather front that brought the cold air and rain from Miami.

The weather report for Caye Caulker-actually for the whole country was rain, rain, and more rain. It didn’t make sense to stay on the island if you couldn’t go snorkeling or scuba diving so after a morning run we went back to the mainland.
(Editor’s note- as you may know, I have been convinced to run a half marathon on Antarctica by Patrick. I am painfully behind on my training and the race is in two months. I will occasionally blog about my pathetic attempts to get ready for the 13.1 miles of grueling running while I am on the road. Though I have run two half marathons before, I actually dislike running. Perhaps the better phrase is I despise running. )

“I am leaving on a jet plane. I don’t know when I will be back again.” ---John Denver.
The flight from the Bahamas to Belize connected through the Miami Airport. Miami, not unlike the Bahamas, were experiencing an uncommon cold front, which would follow us to Belize. From what we heard from people on the plane the entire continent was experiencing strange weather patterns. Though it was cold, we were quite happy that we were not shoveling the snow that hit Michigan two days earlier.
